in 1996, Pimu was found in Minnesota with a severe wing injury. After
3 years of unsuccessful rehabilitative effort by the Raptor Center at
the University of Minnesota, it was decided that Pimu would never survive
in the wild due to her inability to sustain flight. The institute for
Wildlife Studies adopted Pimu in 1999 and she now resides on Santa Catalina
Island, helping promote the understanding of Bald Eagle ecology and
its ethno-cultural importance to California's history. The name Pimu,
was given to her by the Gabrielino/Tongva Tribe, to honor the island's
aboriginal inhabitants. Currently, approximately 15 bald eagles maintain
year-round residence on Santa Catalina Island as part of an on-going
restoration program. All
