#28 The Seychellois culture evolved from a combination of European, African, and Malagasy elements. It is no more apparent than in their Creole language which originated as a means by which slaves form different parts of Africa and Madagascar could communicate with each other and with their French masters. Though based on primarily French, it has African, Malagasy and Arab words, as well as an increasing number of English ones. Seychelles was a British colony for 160 years, a French colony for 45 years, and is today its own independent nation. Its Creole cuisine has an Indian and Chinese influence brought in by laborers and traders who settled in the 19th century. The Seychelles has a population of about 70,000. Most are of African or Malagasy origin, the descendants of slaves or freed slaves. All
